May 20, 2012 - brian i have a 1999 subaru forester ltd non turbo 2ltre, the original idler on the bottom left hand side has a collar on the back edge, all the others dont would it be allright to replace it with one with no collar, or does that have a purpose in stopping the belt running off, i notice on some other engines of the same 2ltre size that they are all flat. great vdeo by the way thanks glenn.

May 20, 2012 - Okay... I was with you to the point you started looseing and tightening the bolts. so you loosen them off 180, then loosent them again, then you tighten only the centre two but then you tighten the outside ones and then you turn the outside ones 90 degrees but not the centre ones?

May 17, 2012 - @briansmobile1 I am doing a HG replacement in 94 impreza(ej18?) I removed the 6 bolts but the head wont come lose. Do I have to open the valve cover and remove more bolts? I followed the legacy hayne manual :/

May 7, 2012 - hey Brian, Been watching your videos. Planning on taking the engine out of an 02 gt limited. If i have "internal" and "external" gasket leaks does that mean with a new gasket set this problem should cease? also, I'm changing the water pump, idlers, tensioners all that jazz. can you give me some helpful tips in accomplishing this task or just some preventative info that I can use for NOT screwing this up? I do have an aircraft mechanic helping me as well but alot of it is going to be on my own.

briansmobile1 Says:

May 5, 2012 - Use a straight edge laid four ways across the mating surface of the head like a union jack and run feeler gauges under the straight edge to check for gaps. If you you have significant gaps you need to deck the head.

catawalks Says:

May 5, 2012 - How do you know if your head needs to be decked? Is there an easy way to tell? I've got my ej25d pulled and I'm gonna be taking the heads off in a couple days, just wondering what I should be looking for to know if I can just clean the surface and replace the gaskets or if I need to get it re-surfaced.

briansmobile1 Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - You can, I don't recommend it.

docbaddass Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - can you do this without dropping the motor? my 02 has a bit of a leak from the head gasket, no codes, smoke, or over heating. just a bit of valve clatter. and thank you very much for the vids.

Apr 1, 2012 - im buying the six star head gaskets for my 2007 subaru impreza should i use the same torque spec u gave me here or will it be diffrent ? really need to no this !!!!

ttz32 Says:

Mar 27, 2012 - How did you get the bolts on the cam sprockets off? I'm stuck trying to find a way to keep the cams from rotating so I break the bolt loose.

briansmobile1 Says:

Mar 24, 2012 - Piston rings rarely if ever fail on these. Most require camshaft removal just to get to the head bolts and machine shops require it anyway.

sunnylotto Says:

Mar 23, 2012 - ARP Bolts use ARP Lube.

junnzx6r Says:

Mar 23, 2012 - Can I remove the heads leaving the cam on them?Getting ready to do my legacy will pull engine out and send heads to get resurface should i change the piston rings also?

jm357m Says:

Mar 20, 2012 - one of the gaskets is gone on my ej20, it never overheated, just using to much water and steam from exhaust, im thinking about getting it fixedup and getting new big end bearings too, anyone here do that??

briansmobile1 Says:

Mar 13, 2012 - lol I didn't know about the all paper bullshit construction at the time.

briansmobile1 Says:

Mar 13, 2012 - I'd still oil the tips of the threads a little.

DesertRida9 Says:

Mar 13, 2012 - What if im using ARP bolts?

cuziamadick Says:

Mar 11, 2012 - you are a great help thanks so much for all your videos keep up the great work!!!

scobaru Says:

Feb 26, 2012 - is this the same for doing a wrx or the turbo subarus?

briansmobile1 Says:

Feb 17, 2012 - You can do it in or out of the car. I like doing it OUT because you'll need to reseal the caps on the back of the engine block and likely the oil pan gasket too. I recommend the timing belt, water pump and cam seals at the same time as well as valve cover gaskets.

jwiebe003 Says:

Feb 17, 2012 - is it possible to replace the head gaskets on a 2000 Forester with pulling the engine? Also, which parts do you replace when you are in there (waterpump, etc.)

briansmobile1 Says:

Feb 12, 2012 - All four are centered in stroke when you put the crank on it's mark at the crank sensor.
