Now use the channel mixer to make this duplicate layer black and white and play around with the rgb values until the tattoo turns black again. But now the tattoo actually conforms to the highlights and shadows on the skin and looks much more realistic as a result.

Apr 24, 2012 - I've been playing around with this a bit and I found if you just isolate the tattoo itself by cutting away the white background from it, then change its blend mode to Overlay instead of Multiply - you get a brown coloured tattoo, but it looks much more realistic because the tattoo is brighter over highlights and darker over shadows, as a real tattoo is. Then you make a selection of the tattoo (Ctrl/Command click its layer), duplicate the background layer. continues...
