May 25, 2012 - So what kind of paper would you recommend for 2d pencil sketches? this technique would work great for this project I'm working on.

limpylegs Says:

May 22, 2012 - ok thank you :)

MayaHowTos Says:

May 22, 2012 - The image was actually drawn digitally in Sketchbook Pro, then inked in Photoshop.

MayaHowTos Says:

May 22, 2012 - Are you sure you're in component (edge) mode? And that you performed a proper extrusion as shown? Sometimes if Maya is acting a bit strangely, you may need to delete your preferences.

May 20, 2012 - For some reason at 5:50 ish working on the mouth if I try to move anything it moves the whole thing what do I do?

ledjdm Says:

May 15, 2012 - i moved the image plane just alitle backward so i can see the lines in front of the plane, and it worked ;)

limpylegs Says:

May 13, 2012 - what kind of paper do you use with this program for the original hand drawn image?

PeschkeGirl Says:

May 12, 2012 - Thank you, You have always responded quickly and been very helpful. Much appreciated!

Timon460 Says:

May 12, 2012 - i mean 2013.

Timon460 Says:

May 12, 2012 - fuck, i still can't understand what did you explain for 2012

MayaHowTos Says:

May 12, 2012 - You can adjust the transparency of a material via its tab in the Attribute Editor. Another option is to move the plane back (i.e. away from the camera) just slightly. This will ensure all the polygons you create are "in front" of the plane and thus visible. Either technique would work.

PeschkeGirl Says:

May 11, 2012 - Is there a way to change the alpha gain of the polygon plane? I am fairly new to Maya, so I'm not completely savvy to all the techniques. Without something similar to an alpha gain setting, I'm assuming I'm not supposed to see my lines when using the create polygon tool with these planes. If you were intending to direct me to a different technique than the one in the video, could you elaborate?

MayaHowTos Says:

May 11, 2012 - Now if you change to textured view, you should see the image (you may need to scale the polygon plane to properly proportion the image. You can now move this plane backwards, just off the axis, and create the polygons for the lesson in front of it.

MayaHowTos Says:

May 11, 2012 - If the problem persists, try using a pair of vertical polygon planes instead of the camera's "image plane." Create a vertical polygon plane, right-click and assign it a new lambert material. Then in the Attribute Editor, select the material and click the button next to Color and then click the File button in the Create Render Node window. Now for the Image Name field in the Attribute Editor, navigate to the front/side images.

PeschkeGirl Says:

May 10, 2012 - I deleted all my preferences and then loaded up Maya again. My points and lines still do not show up when I am tracing the imported image. They will however show when I make points away from the image. Again alpha gain can be zeroed out and still have this effect. I am wondering if this might be related to the fact that I am using the student version of 2013 as this video is about a year old. Thank you for the quick reply though.

MayaHowTos Says:

May 10, 2012 - Try deleting your Maya preferences. You may have inadvertently tripped a setting earlier that is causing this problem.

MayaHowTos Says:

May 10, 2012 - You may be in wireframe mode. Switch to Smooth Shaded mode to see the face. You can also try resetting the tool's settings (Mesh > Create Polygon Tool > [ ]) to make sure the options are at their default settings.

PeschkeGirl Says:

May 10, 2012 - When I use the create polygon tool without the imported image, I can see my lines, but when the image is there, I can't see my lines even when the alpha gain is completely zeroed out. I must be missing something important. Can someone help me out?

judiette Says:

May 5, 2012 - I have to agree with MrLrat. I've got the out line, but the face isn't coming up. did you skip something?

MayaHowTos Says:

Apr 11, 2012 - Try changing to one of the Move, Rotate, or Scale tools. When you extrude, the default tool that is activated is the Manipulator Tool, which affects components based on their normals (which will all have their own direction, hence why components start pulling in different directions). Using the independent tools ensures that components all move in the same direction relative to each other.

vakah2g Says:

Apr 6, 2012 - When i extrude mouth for second time edges start to overlap and wont extrude straight as in your video. In future videos i saw you have experienced same problem but with much more complex object. How can i overcome this? Thank you.

TinyChubbyBuddies Says:

Apr 4, 2012 - this guy only used "extrude", 'insert edge loop tool", "merge vertex tool", and "append to polygon tool" and maybe the basic move scale and rotate. that is all. what he has done so far isn't that hard to follow but I also have alot of experience with maya so i guess that may be a strength.

MisturEvurs Says:

Apr 3, 2012 - I dunno what everyone else is talking about... I found this to be very helpful and I have almost no experience in Maya.
