May 26, 2012 - Is this being played in 1080i or 720?

May 25, 2012 - It wouldn't prevent you at all if you just wanted to see Pripyat, Chernobyl, and say you had been there. It would still be well worth it. I specifically wanted to see the reactor building. I remember watching the event unfold on the news back in '86 and of feeling amazed disbelief at what was happening. The image of the building, sarcophagus, and looming cooling tower is a true icon of technological disaster. I really wanted to stand in front of the thing and see it for myself.

May 25, 2012 - yeah i know but how would that prevent me from going?

deedubya286 Says:

May 24, 2012 - You get to within about 100 yards of the reactor sarcophagus. We were probably there for about 1/2 hour or so. The radiation is actually worse walking around the city of Pripyat although our guide told us that when the wind is in the right direction you can get some nasty stuff blowing off the reactor building. We probably spent 4 or 5 hours total in the area, including lunch at the reactor site cafeteria. Don't leave it too late because they are planning a new structure to cover the site.

May 24, 2012 - how long were you alowed to stay at the acctual reactor? i heard you can only stay for like a couple of minutes.

May 23, 2012 - It was a good trip and Kiev is a beautiful city. Chernobyl and Pripyat were pretty depressing but that's what you expect. Russian would serve you well in Kiev as almost everyone speaks Ukrainian and Russian. Before I went I learned just enough Ukrainian to make a fool of myself.

atomman45 Says:

May 23, 2012 - lol, im planning on learning russian. I also see youve been to the reactor at chernobyl, another thing i want to do.

May 22, 2012 - How old are you ? If you are young enough the US may have a launch vehicle available by the time you are ready. Otherwise, I would suggest Russian language lessons.

May 21, 2012 - @steamingpoopfart, it was the end of the shuttle program, yes. But, other countries are still launching people into space, to and from the ISS. American astronauts just go up with them. Also, in 2017 is the first scheduled launch of the SLS (space launch system). Its the start of a new era in space travel. People can still be astronauts!!

Mar 31, 2012 - I watched the launch of STS-133 from 12 miles West of the pad. I teared over immense reality of the moment. And that happened again while watching this. Give a hand salute to these men and woman who supported our dreams and pursuits for the better of us all. I wish it was still around. They had a lot of life left, and many more minds to kindle.
