A brief stop-motion animation test I did
g my 'Construct-a-bot EVE" posable
re, in my mind the best EVE figure out of
the current others on the market. The
mpanying music is the track 'EVE' from
Wall.E soundtrack.
Comments and
isisms welcome... if I get enough
rest I may do a similar stop-motion test
my remote control Wall.E or my Clean 'N
-O.
EDIT:
I am getting a frequent
repeated in-flow of questions asking how
de EVE hover and how I achieved the
al effects. So I don't have to reply
vidually to each question, I have
iled a crude FAQ right here so that
fully your query may be answered:
Q:
your EVE figure float on its own..?
A:
Don't be silly.
Q: What is the name of
EVE figure..?
A: It is a
struct-a-bot EVE".
Q: How much was
EVE figure..?
A: £10 (uk).
Q: What
ra did you use..?
A: I used a Fuj
Pix S 304 Digital Stills Camera shooting
.2 megapixels.
Q: Did you use a PC or
c..?
A: A PC running windows Vista Home
ium.
Q: What software did you
.?
A: Jasc Paint Shop Pro, Jasc
ation Shop, MonkeyJam, DDClip Pro, DDClip
Audacity.
Q: What frame-rate did you
at..?
A: 15 FPS.
Q: How many frames
there all together..?
A: 446
es.
Q: Are you a professional
ator..?
A: No, I am a student of
ation studying in Southampton.
Q: How
you make EVE hover..?
A: Ok, here we go.
y individual frame of EVE in full body
ired me to mask out not only the plastic
d, but also the 'joining rods' (actually
ets) conecting her 'arms' and her head to
torso. This was achieved by taking a
ure of the background with NO figure in
e first of all so I had what is know as a
an plate'. Then, using Jasc Paint Shop
(like Photoshop in many respects) I could
e this clean background plate (as a
rate layer) behind the layer with EVE on
nd, using the rubber and various other
s, erase the part of the frame in which
figure's stand or any support rods were
ble. Of course this sounds easier than it
..
Q: Explain..?
A: Well first off
'masking' technique could only be
eved if the empty background plate and
plate with the EVE figue were directly in
elation with each other otherwise when I
ed EVE's stand I'd reveal a part of the
ground that didn't correspond correctly
he top layer. This meant the camera had
emain absolutely still throughout
uction, not so easy when I was required
anually press the shutter button to take
y frame.
Also the shadow underneath the
re was very difficult to contend with
use as I removed the stand each frame
s of the shadow would be removed with it.
only way to remedy this was to go through
frame and 'repair' the shadow using
ous tools in Paint Shop Pro (clone brush,
ur dropper, marquee tool, etc...). A time
uming process.
Q: And the visual
cts (EVE blinking, the laser, the
ner)..?
A: All these were created by me
g Jasc Paint Shop Pro and adding them to
y necessary frame. I watched and
atched the Wall.E trailer frame by frame
rder to get the look of the effects
ect and then just used various tools to
te them. Adobe After effects was NOT used
ny time... I don't have it.
Q: Why
your EVE figure look so smooth..?
A:
s in the plastic and the button on the
(which releases the chest plate) had to
rased like the stand and joining rods
g a combination of techniques... namely
clone brush.
Q: The motion blur..?
A:
ted digitally in post-production... not
physically.
Q: How long did this take
ake..?
A: About 3 and a half to 4 days
all.
Q: So to conclude..?
A: In
t, every single one of the 446 frame of
test has had some form of digital
ration applied to it.
Thank you. I
this answers some/all of your questions. Less
