Apr 27, 2012 - Carpentry is building houses. It's a silly distinction but generally true. I hope you understand that buying woodworking tools will set you back thousands of dollars and you may never make enough usable stuff to justify the cost. If you view it solely as a hobby, you'll feel better about it. That is if you have the money.

Oct 8, 2009 - I agree, Beefliverpie, a bench should be counted among the very first tools a person buys or builds. It's hard to do much w/out a bench. Scandinavian benches are good but expensive &/or hard to build. English style benches are not as adaptable as I want a bench to be. A bench built like a big box made of OSB & ply w/ a bunch of holes for holdfasts is easy & cheap to build. W/ a few holdfasts you can clamp work to the top & any of the sides. Clamp a board to an end for a benchstop.
